The Dalton mayor and council on Feb. 2 heard the first reading of a rezoning petition by Viviana Ramirez to change 0.33 acres at 409 South Spencer Street from C-2 (general commercial) to R-3 (medium-density single-family residential). Staff said the property is surrounded by single-family homes and that the petitioner intends to convert the existing commercial building to a full-time residence.
Staff told the council the planning commission unanimously recommended approval and that city department heads raised no objections during their initial review. During the public hearing, an adjacent event center owner raised parking concerns; staff said the public hearing discussion indicated the neighbor conflict related more to parking use than to residential use itself. Staff concluded the rezoning would comply with ordinance criteria for R-3 if approved.
The item was read for the first time and will be eligible for a vote at a subsequent council meeting.
