Colorado House convenes, approves prior day’s journal and hears member announcements

The Colorado House of Representatives convened and completed roll call on Wednesday, with a quorum declared. Representative Lukens moved to approve the journal for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, "as corrected by the chief clerk." The Speaker put the motion to a voice vote and declared the motion adopted.
Members used the floor for introductions and announcements. The chamber recognized Jasmine Toney, a student from Fountain Fort Carson High School, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Douglas County School District superintendent and staff were introduced and applauded. Representative Clifford recognized members of the Colorado Council of 9‑1‑1 Authorities for their work keeping emergency communications operational in Colorado’s mountainous terrain.
Lawmakers announced several committee meetings and events: Representative Mabry said the Judiciary Committee will meet in Room 107 at 1:30 p.m. to hear sunset bills including the cold case task force, matters related to cash bail and bonding, and "house bill 1058." Representative Valdez invited members to a public shutdown hearing at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Old State Library. Representative Story announced a Capital Development Committee meeting at 8:30 a.m. the following morning in Room 357. Representative Gilchrist noted a Joint Health and Human Services Smart Act hearing in the Old State Library upon adjournment.
Representative Lukens recognized CASE (Colorado Association of School Executives) member day at the Capitol and said CASE leaders are responsible for implementing education policy that affects more than 800,000 students statewide. Representative Bradley highlighted "Physical Therapy Day" at the Capitol and recognized students affiliated with Future PTs of America and Colorado.
Pursuant to House Rule 49, the Speaker appointed Representatives McCormick (chair), Soper (vice chair), Woodrow, Mabry and Garcia Sander to a committee on ethics. Shortly after the announcements, the Majority Leader moved that the House stand in recess until later in the day; the House recessed.
