Seaside community center reports rising attendance, steady finances at Feb. 4 meeting

Speaker 1, chair of the Seaside Community Center Commission, reported at the Feb. 4 meeting that the center’s program use and volunteer support are rising while the budget generally tracks to plan.

"We were sitting at 352 congregate meals," Speaker 1 said, adding that home-delivered meals were 534 and total attendance for the prior month was 2,084. Speaker 1 also cited an annual volunteer total of about 807 and noted 73 volunteers in the recent reporting period with an estimated in-kind value of $2,444.77.

The commission received a financial overview showing staffing expenses at about 53.94% of budget with 59.75% of the fiscal year elapsed. Speaker 1 said revenue recognition has increased year to date (speaker cited 43.78% in one line of the report) and that contract dollars had begun to be recognized in the current month.

Commissioners and staff discussed smaller revenue streams classified as "CC vending," which the speakers clarified refers to copy and fax services rather than snack vending; examples given included 5¢ black-and-white and 10¢ color copies. Speaker 2 said that those small services are one factor pulling the revenue percentage down.

Speaker 1 credited donated equipment for reducing near-term capital spending: the commission accepted a donation of tables from the convention center and said staff have repurposed and installed many of them, which may lower the program-supplies expenditures this year.

The meeting notes indicated the commission will continue tracking revenue recognition and will hold formal approval of minutes until a quorum is present at a later meeting. The commission did not record formal board votes on the financial report at this session.

The commission is expected to revisit these budget and staffing metrics in a future meeting when quorum is confirmed.
