The council granted an honorary street designation for Melvin Walker, naming a stretch of West Main Street between 8th Street NW and 7th Street NW as "Mel's Walk." The resolution notes Melvin Walker owned and operated Mel's Cafe at 811 West Main Street for 39 years and that his cafe served as a community gathering place for residents, students and unhoused people.
Council members and family members in attendance spoke about Walker’s history of community service, including providing free meals and supporting local organizations. A councilor moved and the council approved the honorary street designation by voice vote.
The mayor and council expressed condolences at Walker’s recent passing and described the designation as a way to ensure future generations see a visible marker of his community contribution.
