Tonganoxie staff: competitive bids let city consider adding Ridge Street work to Front Street project

City Manager Mister Brankovich told the Tonganoxie City Council on Feb. 2 that the Front Street reconstruction project is moving from planning to preconstruction and that contractor bids came in well below the engineer's opinion of probable cost. That margin, staff said, could allow the city to include Ridge Street stormwater, sidewalk connections and surface/subsurface repairs as a change order while keeping the project within the original Front Street budget.
"We were fortunate enough to have enough savings that we can maybe do 2 road projects for for what we had budgeted for 1," Brankovich said, summarizing staff's review of bids and the city's next steps. Staff advised council that they would ask the city's engineering team to complete a follow-up survey and cost verification before bringing a formal change order for council approval.
Council members asked practical questions about sidewalk placement and pedestrian crossings where Ridge Street meets Front Street and discussed how to mark crosswalks and locate sidewalks to best serve grocery access and nearby neighborhoods. Brankovich said recommended sidewalk placement for Ridge would be on the east side with a clearly marked crosswalk to Front Street, and that sequencing would address Front Street first then Ridge if the change order is approved.
Outcome: Council indicated consensus to have staff and consultants perform additional engineering verification and to return with a proposed change order for council approval. No binding construction contract amendments were approved at this meeting.
