The Tuscaloosa City Council voted to order demolition of the building at 3153 Riggs Road after a city representative reported the property had been condemned and cited for dozens of housing code violations.
A city staff member identified in the record as "Mister Williams" told the council the property was condemned on Aug. 21, 2025, and that it had "48 housing code violations." He said the owner had been contacted and was aware that, if condemned and demolished, the cost of demolition would be charged back to the owner. Williams also stated there is a contract on the property but that the prospective buyer "is still not gonna be, trying to save the house," and recommended proceeding with demolition.
Council members moved and seconded adoption of the demolition order and voted to proceed. After the vote the clerk announced, "Demolition is ordered." The council’s action directs city staff to carry out demolition and to recover demolition costs from the property owner per established procedure.
The council did not discuss further alternatives on the record during the item. The motion instructs city staff to follow the city’s standard condemnation and demolition procedures and to assess demolition costs to the owner, per the presenting staff remarks.
Next steps: staff will schedule and carry out demolition and process the cost charge-back to the owner as described in the council motion and staff report.
