County commissioners approve routine business, advertise 2026 highway bids and OK Arbor Day lawn use

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 2 handled routine business and approved several procedural items.
The board approved the Jan. 26, 2026 minutes and the regular allowance of claims after staff said claims had been reviewed and were ready for signatures. The Highway Department requested permission to advertise bids for 2026 supply and materials — including asphalt, rock, oil, salt and calcium chloride — and Scott Wagner said the department's salt stores were "about anywhere from a quarter to half full" with deliveries scheduled; the board granted permission to advertise the annual bid.
Under commissioners' items, Aaron Swatsky Kingsley of the Department of Environmental Resilience requested the City of Goshen’s annual use of the historic Goshen Courthouse lawn for an Arbor Day festival on May 1; the board approved the request with the usual certificate of insurance and safety requirements. Jeff Taylor presented the routine annual cash rent farm lease with Maple Crest Farms for county-owned tillable land at the landfill; that lease was approved.
One appropriation item that had been submitted (referred to as "letter d") was withdrawn by staff after they identified another budget line that could absorb the cost. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn passed on a voice vote.
