The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education on Nov. 3 accepted a $10,000 donation from the Schumann Foundation and approved a New Mexico capital-outlay grant totaling $274,974 to be used for library books, furniture and technology.
Michelle Havel, the district’s Executive Director of Student Services, accompanied Schumann Foundation representatives Tana Burgos (president) and David Heil (treasurer) to present the $10,000 award. "We present an award of $10,000 to support postsecondary planning from eighth grade through graduation as well as some professional development opportunities for our counselors," Havel said during the ceremony.
Separately, Renee Salcedo presented the capital-outlay grant (fund number 27107), explaining the state allocation is intended for library purchases: "We can buy library books, library furniture, shelves, computers, scanners, subscriptions and software," she said. Salcedo described the local distribution method: district staff divide the total by student counts (about $17 per student) and allocate amounts to schools, which then have three years to spend the funds.
Board member Jeff Morgan moved to accept the Schumann donation and later moved to approve the capital-outlay grant agreement; both motions passed on voice votes.
The donations and grant are intended to supplement school library collections and related services, and district staff said they will return with spending details as schools plan purchases.
