The Baldwin County Commission on Feb. 3 adopted Resolution 2026-52 stating the commission's desire that the Red Hill Sanitary Landfill remain permanently closed. County Administrator (speaker 19) read the resolution on the commission's behalf and the board approved it by a voice vote.
The resolution recounts the landfill's regulatory history: permit 0202 was issued on 05/01/1982 and the Red Hill Sanitary Landfill was closed in April 1996. In 2023 the county received an application to reopen Red Hill for construction-and-demolition (C&D) disposal and to locate a transfer station adjacent to the site; after public hearings and community input that application was withdrawn, the resolution says. The text, as read to the commission, states the board "hereby staunchly opposes any future effort or attempt to reopen the Red Hill Landfill and desires that the Red Hill Landfill remain permanently closed." (resolution text read by County Administrator, speaker 19.)
A motion to adopt the resolution was made and seconded during the meeting and carried by voice vote. Commissioners did not debate additional substantive terms of future enforcement in the meeting; the resolution expresses the county's formal position opposing reopening. After the vote, staff invited members of the public and press to provide contact information so the administration could follow up on related inquiries.
The resolution was adopted as a board position; no implementing ordinance, permit revocation, or administrative enforcement action was recorded in the meeting minutes.
