Deerfield trustees approve purchase of 1,500 tons of rock salt for 2024–25 season

The Village of Deerfield Board of Trustees on Jan. 6 approved a resolution to purchase 1,500 tons of rock salt for the 2024–25 winter season, a purchase village staff said will cost roughly $113,000 and remain within the winter materials budget.
Public Works staff told trustees the village typically signs up in March through joint bids administered by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services and Lake County; bids were opened in November 2024. "So it's a $113,000," a Public Works staff member said while describing the purchase and budget implications. Staff said the village budgeted $200,000 for winter materials and expects any unused allocation to help cover liquid deicers such as brine and calcium chloride.
Trustees asked whether the village should reduce next year’s order given current inventory. Staff said salt does not "go bad" if stored properly and described covered storage at the Hackberry Road yard near the wastewater treatment plant. "We have about 3,700 tons, in reserves," the Public Works staff member said, noting that the village already maintains substantial reserves. The staff member also said the village sells salt to the Park District and the School District at the village unit price but reserves the right to deny outside sales if supplies run short.
On treatment responsibilities, staff said the village pretreats select bridge decks but larger bridges and tollway bridges are treated by the Illinois Department of Transportation or the tollway authority.
The board moved, seconded and approved the resolution by roll call; Trustees Goldstone, Oppenheim, Benton and Berg voted yes and the motion passed.
