Deerfield resident urges change to overnight parking rule; trustees agree to study code

A Deerfield resident asked the board on Jan. 12 to revisit overnight parking rules that he said disproportionately affect apartment and condominium residents without driveways.
Public commenter Yehuda told trustees, “There’s a ordinance 22, 6 7, which states that street parking is not allowed between the hours of 02:30AM to 06:30AM,” and argued that the restriction can penalize people who lack on-site parking. He suggested a permit system or area-based exceptions and urged staff to look for less burdensome administration of guest parking.
Trustees and staff responded that overnight street parking historically has been restricted to avoid congestion and safety concerns, and that the police department can accommodate guest requests when called. Several trustees said the village code was written with mid-20th-century single-family neighborhoods in mind and suggested it is appropriate to review the regulations given changing housing patterns. One trustee said, “I think it’s time maybe to revisit it,” and the board agreed to schedule a fuller conversation at a Committee of the Whole meeting so residents and staff can present options and trade-offs.
No changes to the ordinance were made at the meeting; trustees invited the commenter to participate in future discussions and asked staff to assemble information on the extent and locations of overnight parking needs and administrative implications of a permit program.
