Montezuma County Road & Bridge updates operations, schedules training and equipment

The presentation noted crews are using the dry season to "knock away" backlog work and that trimming is proceeding well. Speaker 2 said crews responded to two guardrail collisions earlier in the year, reporting that insurance has paid out for the January incident on McElmo and that a second claim remains pending. "We got paid out for the insurance for that," Speaker 2 said of the first collision; the second claim is still awaiting resolution.
Speaker 2 outlined several training efforts: controlled roadwork training on unimproved roads north of Lewis to avoid traffic disruption; an on-site CPR and first-aid class hosted at Road & Bridge limited to 11 participants; and upcoming drug-response training at the end of February in Durango. "We're having a class of that out at the road and bridge," Speaker 2 said of the CPR/first-aid session. The presenter also noted that only a small number of Road & Bridge personnel currently hold CPR/first-aid certifications and that expanding training will improve field safety.
On procurement and equipment, staff reported ordering additional PPE, purchasing a new tilt-deck trailer to haul a skid steer, and planning a training video to document safe trailer use and required rigging (boomers, chains, straps). "Trailer will be here Wednesday," Speaker 2 said; staff planned to outfit it and make it ready for use the following week.
Staff also said they are collecting chip-seal quotes and hope to have pricing for oil and surface work by the end of the week, and that flagger training will be scheduled ahead of chip-seal projects. CDL endorsement updates were discussed: presenters said the county expects all CDL drivers to have required endorsements for tanker water operations by month'end.
The board did not take formal action during the update; commissioners thanked staff and moved on to the next agenda item.
