The Carbondale Bike & Pedestrian Commission on Tuesday approved a community outreach campaign and allocated $2,500 from its discretionary budget to begin a yearlong program of messaging aimed at promoting safer walking and bicycling and improved wayfinding.
The motion, made by Speaker 5 and seconded by Speaker 3, passed after discussion about balancing paid underwriting and small giveaways; Speaker 9 abstained from the final vote. The commission directed the outreach subcommittee to execute the outreach calendar and to update the commission monthly on spending and results.
The campaign uses a simple slogan the committee proposed — "Walk, Bike, Connect" — and will rely on a mix of unpaid placements in partner newsletters, paid underwriter spots, and coordinated social and print messaging. Committee members said much of the creative work will be produced by volunteers and edited by publishing partners; the commission will coordinate with town communications staff so messages align with town materials.
The committee outlined an initial budget objective of about $4,000 for a full 12-month program but said $2,500 is available now and will be used to start the effort. Speaker 2 noted underwriting options discussed included a package that, as explained in the meeting, would buy up to 75 radio spots for roughly $1,000 as a first-year underwriter rate.
Next steps: the appointed outreach committee will draft monthly messaging, coordinate with town communications staff, accept proofs from partners for edits and run the initial set of placements. The commission said it will consider asking the Board of Trustees for additional funding later if the subcommittee recommends expanding the campaign.
