Freeport honors new fire, police promotions and lifesaving awards

Freeport City Council opened its meeting with a ceremony that included promotions, oaths and awards before business began.
Tom Corte was sworn in as fire chief; the council and the Board of Fire and Police Commission announced appointments including Hillary Brosious as deputy fire chief and a series of promotions in the fire and police departments. Robert Bush of the Fire and Police Commission read the formal appointment language and Manager Boyer and other staff outlined each appointee’s service record and training.
The council presented life‑saving awards to Corporal Timothy Krieger and telecommunicator Sierra Matthews for actions taken on Jan. 30, 2026. A presenter commended Krieger’s decisive actions at a structure fire and Matthews’ handling of a 911 call across a language barrier; both were presented with department lifesaving awards.
Council also recognized multiple city employees for long service, including Kathy Westby and Lucinda Lenore for 25 years of service in the water and sewer billing/customer service area. Remarks highlighted institutional memory, customer service contributions and recent role changes.
The ceremony preceded the council’s regular agenda; staff and council members thanked those promoted and noted community and departmental support. The meeting then moved into routine business and policy items.
The next regular council meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026 (city offices closed on Presidents Day).
