Hiawatha elementary showcases gains and honors teachers as district sets calendar

Principal Jody Meyer presented the Hiawatha spotlight, describing the school's 2025–26 theme "just keep glowing," test-score improvements, and instructional strategies the school will pursue this year.
Meyer said the school achieved gains in ELA growth and ELL progress, reporting 19 students exited ACCESS last school year. She noted the school’s ELA proficiency goal is 48% for the coming assessment window, up from 43% in 2025, and said the math goal is 40% with a prior reported result around 30.85%. The presentation included MAP and FastBridge snapshots: winter benchmarks showed about 33% of students in green/blue bands for ELA, and about 44% in green/blue for math with 8% in the red band. Kindergarten and first-grade FastBridge growth figures were reported at roughly 60.7% growth in English and 78% growth in Spanish for modest or aggressive growth categories. The board and administration honored three fifth-grade teachers—Antos, Harvey and Sienna—for operating six after-school clubs (accelerated learning bands, knitting and crocheting, creative writing, pop darts, and video game club). Individual students (Milani Vasquez, Sophie Sosa, and Jaden Jackson) received awards recognizing determination, innovation and confidence.
The board also reviewed and discussed next year’s school calendar. Administration confirmed required student contact days total 176 (175 instructional days plus one full parent-teacher conference day counted toward the state requirement). Families were invited to take photos and stay for the remainder of the meeting.
What happens next: The board accepted the presentation; calendar approval was listed on the agenda for action tonight. No instructional policy changes were made at this meeting.
