On Feb. 2 the Crown Point City Council agreed to advance a proposed amendment to Chapter 150 of the Code of Ordinances that would change how vehicle fueling stations are permitted in some zoning districts.
Council President Joe Sanders (introducing the proposal) said he wants fueling stations in B‑3 and I‑1 districts to require special‑use approval rather than be outright permitted, giving the city more oversight on factors such as lighting, hours of operation and building materials. He said the intent is oversight—not a moratorium—and that the council should retain the ability to require site‑specific standards.
Planning staff and other council members supported sending the draft language to the planning commission and ordinance committee to clarify conflicting passages in the current ordinance and to avoid creating unintended “hardship” barriers. Planning staff explained that a special‑use process permits the city to evaluate public‑health, safety and property‑value effects, and allows conditions such as restricted hours or lighting. Another council member cautioned that requiring a hardship showing could unintentionally block applicants in locations the comprehensive plan identified for such uses.
Councilmember Laura (surname in record) moved to read the amendment in title only and hold it for second reading after planning commission and ordinance‑committee review; the motion passed on roll call. The ordinance was not adopted on final reading at this meeting; staff will return a revised draft following commission review.
