Suwannee County rejects lone courthouse dome bid, authorizes rebid and hears multiple project and budget updates

The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners rejected the single bid received for courthouse dome repairs and authorized a rebid after County Administrator Mister Fury asked the board to seek more competitive proposals. Administrator Fury said the single bid exceeded expectations and that staff had drone photos and measurements to support a re-advertised solicitation; the board voted 4–0 to reject the bid and to rebid the project.
Administrator Fury provided a broad project update. Items included work on a HUD shelter grant (ongoing environmental review), the wastewater treatment plant bid schedule (bids to open Feb. 16), waterline extensions connected to a new hotel and a water tower property secured with DOT while pursuing an EDA grant, and reactivating design work for a public safety complex with a procured design firm (CRA/Will Rutherford). He said procurement for a grants/project manager position would be posted and that the county had signed an emergency management services proposal with IEM for consultant support.
Fury also summarized budget and grants growth since 2016: population rising from about 43,000 to roughly 47–48,000, employee counts from roughly 300 to 400 (with ~100 casual/seasonal), employee salaries and benefits costs rising, grants increasing from about $7 million in 2016 to approximately $63 million today (not including a separate $38 million award referenced). He said reserves increased from about $8 million to $20 million and the operating budget rose from about $35 million to $75 million (figures described as rough and for context). The administrator said staff will deliver more detailed budget materials ahead of the formal process.
Separately, County Attorney Mister Norris asked the board to approve a corrected Hatch Mine lease amendment with six deleted words but no substantive change; the board approved that amendment 4–0. The board also approved a 12‑month extension for a temporary RV permit for applicant Doug Forden while active owner-builder construction continues (approved 4–0). Bids for County Road 250 are scheduled to open March 2.
On motions recorded during the meeting, the board acted unanimously on procurement and contract housekeeping to keep projects moving forward.
