David Taylor, principal at East Elementary School, told the council he is concerned about several close calls involving students and vehicles at two surface streets adjacent to campus and asked the city to install marked crosswalks and school-zone signage.
"We would like to ask the city to add a crosswalk in those 2 locations so we can more safely get our kids across the street," Taylor said, citing heavy pedestrian traffic at the crossings and multiple incidents where teachers had to protect students from vehicles. He asked for school signs posted about 75 feet in front of the crosswalks and asked the council to consider flashing lights as a budgetary option.
City staff cautioned that school-zone signage must conform to state code. Grant and the police department said they would evaluate the request, perform an on-site walk-through to measure distances and sight lines, and report back with a conforming proposal for council approval. Officer Reed (the school resource officer) confirmed that enforcement and red-curb markings already help visibility but recommended a site visit.
Next steps: City police and public-works staff will coordinate an on-site assessment, confirm what signs and treatments comply with state law, and return a recommendation to the council for a formal decision.
