Roosevelt City Council approved a request to waive green and tournament fees for the API Innovation Chapter's 50th-anniversary golf tournament, allowing the organization to retain more revenue for its charitable work.
Jason Scholes, identified in the meeting as chairman of the API Innovation Chapter, outlined the group's five-decade history of local charitable work. "In the early years, API was working to help integrate a newly forming oil and gas industry with an already established farm and ranch community," Scholes said, recounting API's longtime support for local projects. Cody Labrum, introduced as the chapter treasurer, said the tournament is API's principal fundraiser.
A city representative (speaker 10) asked the council to waive fees so API could direct all tournament revenue to charity: "What we'd like to recommend tonight is that city council approve waiving all green fees and tournament fees for the upcoming tournament, thereby donating that entire amount they can use to help with their charities." The speaker estimated the waived fees would total about $28,500.
Several council members raised concerns about setting a precedent for fee waivers; one councilmember recalled a recent, similar request that was denied. After discussion about the milestone nature of API's 50th anniversary and the organization's long record of community giving, a councilmember moved to approve the fee waiver; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: city staff will process the waiver for the upcoming tournament and council invited API leaders to an anniversary documentary screening and related events.
