The council voted to advance an ordinance amending Chapter 30 (Signs and Advertising) to first reading after staff described a package of changes intended to clarify temporary sign rules and permit processes.
Patty, the city's attorney director, told the council the current ordinance limited temporary signs to being tied to a specific event and restricted those signs to 14 days. She said the proposed changes would allow on-premise temporary signs by permit and remove the requirement that temporary signs be tied to a single event. "On premise will be allowed by a permit and, they don't have to be tied to an event," Patty said, adding the changes would also update where certain signs are allowed in the zoning table and move to electronic submission for applications.
Patty also explained that the update creates a mechanism for local businesses to request larger-than-150-foot signs in cases of franchise agreements and relaxes construction sign duration limits to reflect project timelines.
Motion to approve the ordinance for first reading was made by Schubert and seconded; roll-call votes were recorded as 'Aye' and the motion carried. The ordinance will return for subsequent readings as required by procedure.
