The Grand County Commission voted unanimously to approve a revised Rural County Grant (RCG) scope and award $200,000 to Moab Community Child Care. The Economic Opportunity Advisory Board recommended redirecting funds originally proposed for a chamber business hub to childcare infrastructure after the governor's office expressed reservations about the chamber's readiness.
Advisory board members Forrest Rogers and Chris Wilson explained $170,000 would fund construction of a new structure on Foraker North (adjacent to existing nonprofit operations at a Lutheran church site) and roughly $30,000 would support workforce training and small infrastructure to help a second provider achieve certification. Presenters said the investment aims to expand childcare capacity (about 60 children currently served) and improve workforce participation.
Several commissioners asked that future grant rounds use broader public outreach so a wider applicant pool can compete for state funds. Supporters said the childcare build is already well advanced and can expend funds within the program's timeframe, while others urged clearer advertising and transparency on recruitment for future cycles. The motion to approve the revised scope and award to Moab Community Child Care passed unanimously.
