Board approves hires, donations and Indiana Wesleyan MOU; reviews policies and math-course requirement

At its meeting the Jennings County School Corporation board approved several routine personnel and operational items and heard informational updates.
Personnel and hires: The board approved two support-staff hires recommended by staff — Carmel Canfield for Grand Creek Elementary (care pro) and Evan Sahaki for Genesee County Middle School (SPED care pro). The motion to approve the recommendations was moved by Cheryl, seconded by Travis, and the vote was announced as 7–0.
Donations: Staff read a list of donations included in the packet and asked the board to approve acceptance. Items read aloud included Brush Creek Elementary — First United Methodist Church $150 for extra clothing in the nurse’s office; multiple $200 gifts from the James County Community Foundation for student snacks and the middle school food pantry; donations of $500 from James County Pallets and $500 from Tri State Doors for high school student activity funds; and other gifts listed at the corporation level (Hope Food Program; Sardinia Baptist Church; Scott A. Terry; and others as read). The motion to accept donations was moved by Pat, seconded by Curt, and passed by voice vote.
Partnerships: The board approved a standard annual memorandum of understanding for student teaching with Indiana Wesleyan University. The agreement was presented as routine; the motion to approve was moved by Travis, seconded by Cheryl and recorded as seven in favor.
Policy and curriculum notices: Staff presented a first reading of proposed food-service policies (one policy will be rescinded and folded into a general food-service policy); the board was informed that the item will return for a vote at the next meeting. Separately, staff provided an informational update that state legislation requires offering advanced math courses for grades six through eight to qualifying students (qualified by iLearn proficiency and class average), with parents able to opt their children out; staff noted new course codes will be required and will be brought to the board for approval.
The meeting closed with an announcement that January is School Board Appreciation Month and with a motion to adjourn.
