Select Board approves redirecting $10/hour police-detail fee to officers

A municipal representative and the chief returned to the Select Board on Dec. 9 to ask that the $10-per-hour portion of police detail fees, previously collected by the town, be redirected to the officers who perform the detail shifts. The speaker noted neighboring towns pay $70 per hour for detail work and urged parity to help recruitment and retention.
Board members confirmed this is a reallocation of fees already collected and that it would not increase town expenditures. The union had already approved the administrative form, staff said, and no additional public hearing was required because the funds have already been collected. The board moved and approved the administrative change to transfer the $10/hour detail supplement to officers doing the work.
"This is merely a transfer of the fees that's collected to the person doing the work," one board member summarized before the voice vote.
The motion passed by voice vote and will be implemented administratively by the police department and town finance staff.
