Commission authorizes staff to begin phased updates to the Sarasota City Plan

The City Commission authorized staff on Jan. 20 to begin preparing phased updates to the Sarasota City Plan (the city's comprehensive plan), with an initial focus on a new transportation chapter and updated population projections extending to 2055.
David Smith, Manager of Long Range Planning, told commissioners the last major comprehensive plan update occurred in 2008 and that staff intends to present individual chapters over time to avoid overwhelming the public and elected officials. The schedule would include transportation, population projections, historic preservation, government coordination and recreation/open space chapters in the near term, followed by utilities, housing, environmental protection and future land use chapters in 2027–2028.
Smith said the city will pursue the state's expedited review process (30‑day review) for many items and coordinate public outreach through advisory boards, open houses and stakeholder groups such as CCNA. Commission discussion focused on timing, state review implications and the relationship between the downtown master plan and future land use updates.
Vice Mayor moved to authorize staff to prepare the chapter updates; the motion passed unanimously.
