Commission approves Boys & Girls Club rezone and site plan for new Newtown facility

The Sarasota City Commission unanimously approved an ordinance and site plan on Jan. 20 that will allow the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties to build a new 21,760‑square‑foot, single‑story multipurpose facility at 1790 21st Street in Newtown.
Joel Friedman, agent for the Boys & Girls Club, presented the proposal to rezone roughly 4.49 acres from RMF‑2 to G and to permit a site plan (25‑SP‑02) and major conditional use (25‑CU‑01). Friedman said the new building would be constructed south of the existing club so the current facility can remain open while construction proceeds.
