Fire Chief Richard Edwards briefed the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Board on operational matters on Feb. 3, highlighting regional multi‑agency training, mutual‑aid activity and a fuels‑reduction grant intended to reduce wildfire risk in a high‑hazard area.
Edwards said recent multi‑agency training with the cities of Reno and Sparks included live fire evolutions in Spanish Springs intended to standardize regional operating procedures. He reported December call statistics of 1,762 incidents: 916 emergency medical services calls and 17 fires, and said Truckee Meadows provided automatic aid to Reno on 284 calls and to Sparks on 82 calls; Reno and Sparks provided aid to Truckee Meadows in December as well.
Edwards also announced the fuels division received disaster relief funding from the Nevada State Lands office through the U.S. Forest Service totaling $373,000 over three years. The funding will support work in Southwest Washoe Valley, including treatment of roughly 90 acres on 17 private properties to reduce hazardous fuels and wildfire risk.
When asked about a recent pallet fire in Sun Valley, Edwards said the cause remains under active investigation with Reno Fire investigators and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and that no determination of arson had been made at the time of the meeting.
