Truckee Meadows recognizes volunteers, partners and toy-drive organizers

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District on Feb. 3 recognized several partners and volunteers for their contributions to emergency readiness and community aid. Division Chief August Eisenhagen presented partnership awards to Waste Management representatives and named individual volunteers and local businesses for support of the district’s green waste program and emergency operations.
Eisenhagen said Waste Management donated 16 dumpsters to the district’s green waste effort—work he said typically would cost about $8,000 in rentals and logistics—and credited the partnership with speeding citizen drop-off and reducing processing time. He also commended Joan Olsen and Sue Davis of the Ironwood Equestrian Center for hosting large-animal evacuation trainings and serving as an incident command post during past fires. Julie Brandt of Bridal Farms received a chief’s letter of commendation for providing land and logistical support for fuels-management projects and community emergency education.
The board recognized Washoe County Red Rock volunteers Steven Harvey, Scott Paggio and Doug Holzabas for early action on the Rancho Fire (Aug. 14, 2025), when their engine crew engaged structure-protection operations as the fire progressed to nearly 1,500 acres and helped protect four primary residences. Chief Edwards presented leadership awards to firefighter Alex Doerr and engineer Anthony Shiro for organizing the department’s toy drive and countywide Santa parades, which officials said broadened community engagement.
Alex Doerr, president of the Truckee Meadows Firefighter Foundation, described a busy season of giving that included a toy drive, a concurrent food drive that donated more than 2,000 pounds to a Northern Nevada food bank, partnerships with Renown Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, and the adoption of families through the Children’s Cabinet. Doerr said foundation volunteers also assisted the family of a fallen battalion chief.
Commissioners praised the volunteers and staff for their efforts and extended condolences to the family of the deceased battalion chief. The board combined two agenda items so the recognitions could be presented together and took no formal action beyond the acknowledgments.
