Staff briefs commission on equity‑based Preservation Plan summit and near‑term recommendations

Historic Preservation Office staff briefed the commission about an Equity Based Preservation Plan Summit held Nov. 21 to mark the one‑year anniversary of the plan’s adoption. Kara Bertrand and Annie Flom described a morning‑long session with roughly 50 attendees from city departments, community organizations and private sector partners to prioritize near‑term recommendations and build implementation partnerships.
Staff said the summit focused discussion on five impact areas: keep residents and businesses in place; improve processes; provide more resources; raise the visibility of preservation; and tell Austin’s full story. Eighteen near‑term recommendations were selected for focused follow‑up; staff transcribed participants’ sticky‑note feedback into an online platform to allow continued input and will revisit workplans to incorporate summit feedback.
Commissioners were encouraged to attend future annual summits and to engage with staff follow‑ups. Staff said they will circulate follow‑up emails to participants and invited commissioners to the annual event next year.
