BWP & Associates presented a leadership profile to the Rockford Public Schools Board of Education on Sept. 2, summarizing findings from interviews, focus groups and a 2,779‑respondent survey the firm said strengthened and validated themes from community engagement. The profile highlights community strengths — a committed teaching staff, career pathways and robust extracurricular offerings — and lists priority candidate attributes including strong communication, a champion of equity, instructional leadership and experience in large, diverse districts.
The consultants told the Committee of the Whole that the survey responses far exceeded validity thresholds and triangulated with in‑person focus groups. "You need to be very, very proud," a BWP presenter said of the district's community engagement and the resulting profile. BWP said 2,629 respondents completed the English survey, 134 Spanish, 14 Arabic and 2 Swahili, and that roughly 70% of respondents identified as Rockford residents with a mix of employees, students and community members represented.
Board members asked about vetting and confidentiality. BWP said it conducts reference checks, transcript and license verification and internet background checks; it will provide candidate documents to the board and keep names confidential until the board receives the finalist list. BWP reported receiving about 31–32 applications at the time of the meeting and left the application window open through Nov. 1.
Next steps and timeline presented by the consultants include interview preparation with the board in mid‑November, first and second round interviews in late November and December, and a target for a final board decision and contract discussions by Dec. 16. The consultants requested the board post the leadership profile on the district’s search web page; board members agreed to post the document after correcting dates.
The board did not take a formal vote on hiring at the meeting; the presentation and Q&A will inform future action when candidates are nominated for interviews.
