The proposal outlined a three‑phase project that the YMCA said would eventually include an eight‑lane competitive aquatic center with spectator seating, locker room renovations and repurposed active spaces.
“Pool access is limited on this side of the river,” the YMCA representative said, adding that the project could host competitive meets and expand swim lessons, water therapy and community use. The representative also said lifeguard recruitment is a persistent challenge and described an existing partnership with the district that trained high‑school PE students; that pilot produced 10 lifeguards who worked at the Riverside Aquatic Center and several who went on to work for the YMCA.
The YMCA asked the district to consider curriculum coordination and staffing partnerships so schools can integrate water‑safety lessons into PE classes. “If we can work with PE teachers starting from elementary school … we hope it’s going to improve things when people are in and around water,” the YMCA program speaker said.
Board members asked about hosting interscholastic events and potential funding. The YMCA noted it is pursuing philanthropic partners and grant opportunities but did not announce specific commitments.
Next steps: YMCA representatives said they will continue stakeholder outreach with district staff and look for funding partners; the board encouraged ongoing communication as the project develops.
