Parents urge clarity, refunds and competitive intent for Lincoln Way Special Olympics teams

Parents at the Nov. 21 board meeting praised the district’s new Special Olympics basketball program but urged clearer communication and policy fixes after families were told players cannot play for two Special Olympics teams.

"We were told that after this recent discussions Lincoln Way has had with other schools in Special Olympics of Illinois, it was mentioned that a player can't play for 2 Special Olympics teams," parent Tessa Quinlan said during public comment. Quinlan asked whether both Lincoln Way teams would be able to enter regional competition and whether families who paid fees should receive refunds if they were misinformed.

Jeanette Schultz, a parent representative for special-needs families, described strong community interest (she said more than 30 students participated in the inaugural season) and thanked coaches Eli Leonard and Sarah Evans, transportation organizer Laura Erlenbaugh and volunteers for supporting the program. Schultz said the program needs "renewed collaboration with the administration" to expand and improve logistics, paperwork and competitive opportunities.

Parents asked that the district confirm whether both teams will have proper stat reporting and eligibility to enter region play and, if necessary, provide refunds for costs families incurred because of late or unclear communication. District staff did not provide a definitive eligibility ruling during public comment; board and staff acknowledged the concerns and thanked parents for their involvement.

The board did not take any formal action on the matter at the meeting; parents were told administration will continue to coordinate with Special Olympics Illinois and with local partners to clarify eligibility and next steps.
