At its Feb. 2 meeting, Portland Public Schools’ public and legislative affairs committee agreed to monitor LD2106, a bill limiting immigration enforcement presence in schools, hospitals and childcare centers, rather than submit testimony.
Carol Lentz raised LD2106 and noted that the bill—introduced by Ellie Sato—drew substantial testimony at a prior Thursday hearing. The committee asked the superintendent to review whether district policy and procedures already align with the bill’s provisions.
Superintendent Skallon reported the district had reviewed the bill and concluded its policy and practice already address the items LD2106 covers; therefore the superintendent recommended monitoring the measure rather than submitting testimony. The committee agreed and asked staff to add LD2106 to the tracker for ongoing monitoring.
Committee members emphasized the need to track the bill and to watch for any provisions that might require changes to district policy or practice before taking a formal position.
