Committee approves Maiden Lane permit updates, shortens closure hours to 8 p.m.

Supervisor Sauter sponsored a resolution to update permitting terms for Maiden Lane in Union Square, replacing an obsolete operator name with the current Union Square Alliance, delegating authority for certain activations to SFMTA and Public Works, and urging adjusted closure hours. The resolution would allow temporary activations beyond standard tables and chairs (art installations, stages, lighting, vendors) and asked the MTA board to adjust closure hours to expand activation opportunities.
Marissa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, said the community supports activation and requested a closure hour of 8 p.m. to accommodate Recology collection timing and resident interests. Supervisor Sauter proposed an amendment (originally to 9 p.m., later revised to 8 p.m. after discussion with the Alliance). With no public speakers on the item, the committee adopted the amendment and sent the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation (3-0).
