BUNCOMBE COUNTY — Elections staff told the Buncombe County Board of Elections that a set of 41 absentee ballots was ready for board review and certification. Staff said the count comprised 39 civilian ballots and two overseas ballots.
Erin, who led the absentee review, explained the board would see many ballots from multipartisan assistance teams (MAT) that assist voters in covered facilities and noted that many ballots included photo‑ID exception forms. “We’re gonna have a total of 41 to go through. That’s 39 civilian and 2 overseas,” Erin said as she began the review.
During the session board members checked signatures and identified a small number of poor‑quality or hard‑to‑read items. Staff duplicated two ballots where the originals were not sufficiently legible; the board administered the oath for duplicated ballots and certified the duplications.
After sealing the poly bag containing the original and scanned absentee ballots and confirming required signatures, the board moved and voted to approve the absentee ballots; the motion carried on a vocal 'aye' and was seconded by Sally. Staff reported the office had sent 795 absentee ballots overall and that duplicated items were limited to the two noted cases.
Next steps: The board recessed the meeting and will reconvene at the warehouse for testing; the public was invited to attend the reconvened session.
