Yang said O'Neil "always values your voice" and highlighted O'Neil's role creating student achievement action groups for Latino, African American and Asian American/Pacific Islander students.
"In her 23 years of service to the board of education, Pat was a champion for many things," Yang said. The board presented a keepsake copy of the resolution; Yang stated, "this is the resolution the board unanimous passed."
Board members, elected officials and the superintendent offered tributes that emphasized O'Neil's accessibility, institutional knowledge and focus on equity. Board colleague Brenda Wolf recalled receiving morning calls from O'Neil and said O'Neil's "questions made us think harder," adding, "From the first gavel to the last vote, Pat O'Neil served with integrity, with courage, and with heart."
Carla Sylvester said O'Neil's tenure "was her life" and called the naming of the boardroom an effort to preserve O'Neil's example for future board members. Dr. Thomas Taylor, superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, introduced family representative Rick O'Neil and described the occasion as an opportunity "to pause and give thanks."
Rick O'Neil thanked attendees and described Pat O'Neil's devotion to children and the system, saying she "loved the children" and that seeing the plaque made him emotional.
Sen. Nancy King and members of the county council attended and offered personal remembrances. Andrew Friedson, a Montgomery County Council member, said O'Neil consistently centered conversations on students and served as a deep resource for county and school officials.
The board's action to dedicate the room was captured in a resolution described during the ceremony as having passed unanimously; the transcript does not record a numeric vote tally. After the presentations, board members posed for photographs and the event moved into an open reception for guests.
