Man testifies before the House seeking $50,000 reappropriation for medical hardship

Felipe Q. Atalik told the House during public comment that he has been unable to work since 2018 and asked members to consider passage of a $50,000 assistance item reflected in local bill language. "I am here to respectfully ask the consideration on the passage of the 50,000 assistance," Atalik said, and told members he would submit medical documentation for the record.

Atalik introduced family members and supporters in the gallery and said two doctors had provided written diagnoses describing his condition. "The prognosis of my health at this time is not that good," he said, and asked for the funds so he could "enjoy a little of my time together with my family."

House members expressed sympathy and urged prompt administrative review. Floor leader thanked members for advancing related appropriations bills and Representative Danny Aquino and others asked that Atalik’s request be included in follow-up scheduling for the next session. The chair said he had requested a certification of availability of funds from the Department of Finance and identified poker- and e-gaming-fee revenues as the likely source under review.

No formal appropriation for Atalik was passed during this session. Members asked staff to prepare funding-certification paperwork and to consider the request at an upcoming session.
