Summary
Museum and Archives of Rockingham County (MARC/The Marq) reopened Oct. 4 after renovations that included a $1,100,000 HVAC replacement; the capital campaign has raised $2,000,000 and the organization introduced new executive director Sean Rogers.
David French, president of the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County (MARC), told the Board of Commissioners that the organization reopened its renovated historic courthouse facility to the public on Oct. 4 and has raised $2,000,000 to support continued work.
"Replacement of the heating and air conditioning was accomplished at a cost of 1,100,000.0," French said, and he credited grants and local philanthropic support for enabling the work. He named a state grant and support from Phil Berger and Reese Pirtle, a National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant, Rockingham County contributions and donations from foundations and local banks.
Sean Rogers, who joined MARC as executive director in October, described program goals and community partnerships. He said the museum will offer tours, school and community programming and special events, and provided public hours: Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesday by appointment. Rogers asked the board and the public to support upcoming events, including holiday programming at Wright Tavern and exhibits highlighting local history.
Commissioners congratulated MARC board members, volunteers and staff and encouraged residents to visit. The board noted the facility’s renovation began in 2024, took longer and cost more than initially forecast, and commended the collaborative effort among county staff, volunteers and funders.
MARC representatives said additional fundraising and improvements are planned and that the lease arrangement with Rockingham County has helped secure grants and match funding. The board did not take formal action on museum funding at the meeting.
