Summary
Kevin Berger and Commissioner Charlie Ong recapped the Nov. 17 meeting, recognizing senior-games participants and youth champion Carly Rae Reves, outlining a roughly $1,000,000 shared-savings pool with a 15% departmental allocation, and noting two rezoning cases reviewed by the board.
Kevin Berger and Commissioner Charlie Ong on Friday summarized the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners' Nov. 17 meeting, recognizing senior-games participants and a youth national champion, outlining the county's shared-savings program and its recent $1,000,000 in savings, and noting two rezoning cases the board reviewed.
The commissioners opened by thanking senior-games participants for what they described as strong and increased participation this year. "We were able to recognize the participants in the senior games," Commissioner Charlie Ong said, encouraging seniors to participate next year.
Kevin Berger highlighted a local youth achievement: "She is a national champion in the girls' 7 and 8 year old pitch, hit, and run competition put on by Major League Baseball," Berger said of Carly Rae Reves, who won the national title during events held around the World Series.
Berger outlined the county's shared-savings program, which rewards departments that come in under budget by returning a portion of savings for use on projects the following year. "Last year, the departments were able to save about 1000000 dollars and they end up getting about 15% of that in the next year's budget, to put towards projects," Berger said. He added that proposed uses of those funds must be approved by the county manager and by the board.
On oversight and incentives, Commissioner Ong said the county links performance measures to the shared-savings program: "We use these as stretch goals to encourage folks to go above and beyond in order to receive that additional money," he said, and noted the commission is still reviewing and updating those goals yearly.
The board also heard two rezoning requests. Ong described one case as a change from residential-agriculture to highway-commercial and the other from neighborhood-commercial to residential-agriculture, calling both "pretty straightforward." No votes or final outcomes were reported in the recap.
The commissioners closed by announcing their next meeting on Dec. 1 in the Commissioner's Boardroom and inviting the public to attend or watch the livestream on the county's YouTube page. Berger ended the recap by wishing listeners a "Happy Thanksgiving."
