Aurora council adopts hotel-occupancy tax increase, citing parity with neighbors

The Aurora City Council adopted an ordinance amending the municipal hotel occupancy tax (article 44, section 191) at its July 22 meeting. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote of 9 yes, 3 no, and the ordinance was declared adopted.
Supporters, including Alderman Barrera and Alderman Nunez, said raising the hotel-tax rate catches Aurora up with neighboring communities and that a forthcoming casino may generate additional lodging demand. Alderman Mesiakos, speaking from a business perspective, said he would vote no and warned that taxing hospitality could harm local business.
The ordinance passed despite dissent from a minority of aldermen. The city will implement the amended hotel-occupancy tax per the ordinance language (effective date as specified in the ordinance document).
