District says cameras and filtered water stations nearing completion; trustees press for MOU defining police access

District safety director Señor Romero reported at the May 1 board meeting that a phased camera installation project is complete and that cameras have been ordered or installed at 31 schools, with the district aiming to have systems operational by the start of the next school year. Romero described recent trainings (lockdown and active-shooter exercises) held with school staff and local law enforcement and said CBPD now has incident-based access to school video for investigations.

Trustees asked for clarity about how and when police personnel will gain access to live or recorded video. Romero and technology staff said current practice is incident-driven: police may be given access to recorded footage after an incident is reported, and a limited technology team has broader access for review; the district will negotiate an MOU to define access, auditing and notification procedures.

On water safety, Romero said filtered refill stations will be installed across schools; staff said the stations include an extra filtration stage and that about 15 schools already have systems in place, with the remaining 31 stations scheduled for installation before the next school year. Trustees and community members raised questions about timetables and public messaging; Romero offered to provide a follow-up list of installed schools and a Friday status update.

Trustees did not vote on a final MOU at the meeting; they requested staff prepare a clear MOU and reporting plan explaining who may access cameras, the conditions for access (incident-based), and audit procedures so the board and unions can review before execution.
