Glazenwood residents ask San Mateo council to grandfather neighborhood before preservation ordinance finalization
Summary
Multiple Glazenwood homeowners asked the City Council to agendize a formal hearing to grandfather the neighborhood into historic‑district status ahead of a pending update to the city’s historic‑preservation ordinance, citing low participation in outreach and the need for a fair hearing.

San Mateo — Dozens of Glazenwood residents urged the City Council Tuesday to add a specific agenda item to protect their neighborhood’s historic‑district status before the council finalizes an updated historic‑preservation ordinance.
Residents including Doug Deanna and Deborah Athens told the council they believe the city’s public outreach produced statistically insignificant participation for a change that affects many homeowners. "Total participation, 163 people, that's 16 hundredths of 1% of our residents," Doug Deanna said, urging a redo of the engagement process and a formal council hearing to "grandfather" Glazenwood.
Multiple speakers requested the council either pass a separate resolution recognizing Glazenwood’s existing status or explicitly include protections in the ordinance. In response, Councilmember Spierico Guditski asked staff to agendize a council discussion and to prepare a formal resolution for consideration before the ordinance adoption.
City staff acknowledged they are preparing local historic‑preservation ordinance materials and will coordinate any council direction with their existing timeline. The council did not take a final vote on the request Tuesday but moved to have the item agendized for further council consideration.
Next steps: staff will place a discussion and potential resolution on a future council agenda as directed; timing and all proposed language will be returned to the council for formal action.
