Town Council names Wickford waterfront parcel "Anchor Park" after unanimous public hearing

The North Kingstown Town Council voted unanimously Monday to name a small waterfront parcel adjacent to the municipal parking lot and town dock "Anchor Park." The public hearing followed a request from William Panoy on behalf of the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Parade Committee.
"Committee members have been using this for a few years as a marshaling area for our flags," William Panoy said while describing the narrow slice of land behind the former Earnshaw's drugstore that overlooks Wickford Harbor. He noted views of fishing boats, the town wharf and Hussey Bridge and described benches, shade trees and an on-site anchor as community assets.
Randy Wheatman, a nearby resident, told the council that residents and visitors already refer to the spot as "Anchor Park" and urged the council to make the name official. A councilmember moved to adopt the name; it was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council President said the council had scheduled a public hearing and that the testimony received at the hearing had been positive. No opposition was recorded during the public comment period. The naming takes effect immediately as a municipal designation of that parcel.
The council included the action in the minutes and thanked Panoy and other parade committee members for bringing the request forward.
