Public pushes Granite County to clarify forest, county and private-road responsibilities

"What are county roads? What are private roads? What are forest roads?" Gagliano asked, urging the commission to place the cooperative Forest Road agreement on the agenda for a full discussion.
County staff said the Forest Service submits its list annually, and commissioners agreed to put the cooperative road agreement on a future agenda before its May 1 expiration so the public and the county planner can review maps and clarify jurisdiction. Commissioners noted the county maintains maps in the clerk’s office and that citizens may inspect them in person.
The discussion also touched on bridge inspections by the Montana Department of Transportation and where responsibility lies for maintenance at railroad crossings and crossbucks. Commissioners asked staff to obtain insurance-cost estimates for county-owned crossing equipment and to arrange a Forest Service meeting on the agenda to resolve outstanding disputes raised by residents.
