Summary
Board Bill 119, a Chapter 99 redevelopment plan to rehabilitate 8111 North Broadway in the Baton area for small-event uses, was recommended for passage after sponsors said the owner invested about $75,000 and local aldermen backed the effort to stimulate neighborhood commerce.
St. Louis — The Housing, Urban Development and Zoning Committee on Jan. 27 recommended Board Bill 119, a Chapter 99 redevelopment plan and blight study to support refurbishment of an event center at 8111 North Broadway in the Baton neighborhood.
Alderman Tais, who sponsored the bill, said local entrepreneurs have invested sweat equity and cash into the property and asked the committee for a due-pass recommendation to allow a 10-year tax abatement that would help small-event and community uses. The sponsor said the owner purchased the property for $20,000 and has invested roughly $75,000 to date to restore the space.
Committee members praised the owner’s initiative and noted the project fits a pattern of neighborhood reinvestment on that Broadway corridor. Vice Chair Saulnier and others asked staff to update certain exhibits (for example, to reference the city’s most recent sustainability plan where appropriate). SLDC representatives indicated they would assist with any needed exhibit updates and that compliance and presentation format can be refined before the floor vote.
The motion to recommend the bill carried, with the clerk recording five aye votes. The bill now goes to the Board of Aldermen for further consideration.
