The Riverton City Council voted to adopt Resolution 25-55 authorizing staff to file a complaint to take a small parcel by eminent domain to fix a sidewalk alignment and reduce a traffic blind spot.
City staff explained the procedural requirement to provide the property owner, identified as Andre Malay, an opportunity to be heard; the council called the owner's name and found he was not present. Staff said the sidewalk currently juts into the perimeter in a way that would create a blind-spot for vehicles turning left as traffic in the area increases, and the city needs to condemn a small portion of the property so the sidewalk can be moved north to tie into adjacent improvements.
The motion to adopt Resolution 25-55 was moved and seconded; the council then recorded a roll-call vote in favor. Staff said the anticipated payment to the owner is roughly $50,000, though additional subsurface utility work may change the final cost.
What's next: staff will commence the eminent-domain process consistent with state law, provide opportunities for the owner to respond, and return to council with final costs and project timing as the design and utility coordination progress.
