Riverton planning commission postpones meeting after failing to reach quorum

Riverton’s Planning Commission postponed its scheduled meeting after the chair said the panel did not have the four-member quorum required to conduct business. Commissioner Park announced the postponement after waiting for late arrivals.

"We require 4 planning commissioners," Commissioner Park said, explaining that one commissioner was sick and another had recently had a baby. He said staff would give late arrivals about 15 minutes to appear but that the commission could not proceed without a quorum.

Commissioner Park told attendees that, despite Commissioner Matheson arriving during the delay, the additional presence still left the commission short of the required members and the agenda must be moved. "We will have to push the agenda items that are currently slated for tonight's hearing and move them to the next planning commission meeting," he said.

The chair also clarified how public input will be handled: "If you submitted comment to staff, understand that all of that is now part of the record. Those materials will move forward to the next meeting. You don't need to resubmit anything if you previously have done so," Commissioner Park said.

The chair apologized to the audience for the inconvenience and said the commission will attempt to prevent similar last-minute cancellations in the future. He said the items were rescheduled for "the 20 second of this month" as spoken during the meeting; the transcript did not provide a clearer calendar date.

Because no quorum was reached, no motions were made or votes taken. The commission’s next procedural step is to reconvene at its next scheduled meeting and take up the postponed items then.
