Arlington Heights police receive CALEA accreditation, department praised by board

The Arlington Heights Police Department presented a national accreditation award to the board after a four-year review; the department received advanced and meritorious status from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The Arlington Heights Police Department on Feb. 2 told the Village Board it has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) after a four-year assessment.
Police Chief Nick Pecora said the department achieved its sixth accreditation cycle and was awarded ‘‘advanced and meritorious status’’ by the commission after a unanimous vote. He described CALEA as a credentialing authority established to promote best practices, independent review and continuous assessment of law enforcement agencies.
Deputy Chief Greg Czarnecki and members of the department’s executive staff were recognized for coordinating the review process. According to the department’s presentation, accreditation requires written directives, community engagement, preparedness planning and annual reviews.
President Tonalia praised the department, calling it ‘‘top shelf’’ and thanking officers for their service. The board and department paused for photographs after the award presentation.
No formal board action was taken on the accreditation beyond the public presentation; the award is a recognition of the police department’s practices and does not impose policy or budget changes at the board level.
