Joint Sustainability Commission forms an eight‑member budget working group to prioritize high‑impact climate recommendations

The Joint Sustainability Commission voted to create a focused budget working group to reexamine the commissionfs past recommendations and prepare a pared-down set of fiscally realistic, high-impact climate recommendations for city decision-makers.

Chair Kaiba White proposed forming a group to review staff responses and prior recommendations and to return to the full commission with two or three prioritized items. Anna Scott and others urged narrowing to items likely to produce cost savings and political traction, such as electrifying fleets, installing EV charging focused on fleet operations, and pollutant capture programs.

"So that's the motion is to create a working group that is focused on the budget recommendations as a whole from the JSC, potentially looking at all the sectors for the most strategic items," the chair said. The motion carried; the chair said she would email the identified participants (a group of eight, including several in-person and online members) and circulate the staff response and prior recommendation packets for review before the next meeting.

Commissioners agreed to seek low- and no-cost recommendations first while keeping a separate track for more ambitious proposals. The chair said she would bring a draft to the commissionfs next meeting and invited volunteers to contribute ahead of that meeting.

Next steps: Chair will circulate the staff response, the larger project lists and the commissionfs prior recommendations; the working group will meet before the March meeting to prepare prioritized items for the full commission to consider and potentially forward to the bond advisory process.
