The Historic Landmark Commission on Jan. 7 approved a certificate of appropriateness for work at 1114 West 10th St., a contributing property in the Castle Hill Local Historic District, with a condition to preserve and restore original street-facing windows rather than replace them.
The proposal calls for removing a non-historic 1970s rear addition, repairing exterior stone and wood, reroofing, and constructing a new rear addition set behind the contributing structure. Architect Lindsay Mackey and owners Jennifer Schell and family presented existing and proposed elevations and said the design seeks to repair character-defining fabric while placing new volume at the rear and out of street view.
Commissioner Cook, who pulled the item for discussion, asked the team to retain or restore the front and side windows; the applicants said they would either restore the originals or install like-for-like units that match the historic appearance while improving energy efficiency. Commissioner Cook moved to approve the certificate of appropriateness with a requirement that historic windows on the front and sides be restored; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Commissioners also asked the applicants to review porch railing detailing with the Architectural Review Committee or staff so the porch design reflects period-appropriate precedent, and to clarify that windows located in portions slated for demolition would not be required to remain.
