Steel Lake residents press council on weeds, geese and water quality as advisory appointments are considered

Residents and prospective members of the Steel Lake Management District Advisory Committee told the Federal Way City Council they want continued, data‑driven stewardship of the lake, especially for invasive plants, geese management and water quality.

Bruce Myers, who has served on the advisory committee, said the group conducts regular counts and has coordinated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on waterfowl control. Myers described approaches that include nest counts and, when necessary, egg addling to limit population growth.

Gary Smith, a 20‑year resident of Steel Lake, said a past event prompted him to write to the council: "when I looked at the lake one morning, it looked like it was dying," he said, describing the visual condition that motivated his concern and involvement. Other applicants and incumbents said they are focused on preventing algae blooms and improving communication about park events that affect parking and traffic.

Margaret Rayner, a decades‑long lake advocate, urged the council to consider acquiring the remaining parcel on Redondo Creek to protect creek connectivity and salmon habitat. Councilors discussed the property and encouraged further staff follow‑up.

Council discussion noted that four LMD seats expired Dec. 31; councilors recommended forwarding Jeremy Benson (incumbent chair), Bruce Myers, Ken Stark and Shay Eeks as nominees to be formally appointed at the subsequent public council meeting. No vote was taken during the interview portion.

Staff indicated the city has a contract with USDA for waterfowl management and that the LMD continues to track counts and treatment outcomes. The council directed staff to place the recommended appointments on the full council agenda for formal action.
